Sulaiman (Arabic: سليمان Sulaymān, "man of peace") was a prophet of knowledge and wisdom. He was the youngest son of Prophet Dawud. He was born at al-Quds. He had power and authority not only over men but the Jinn as well. Allah had bestowed upon him the ability to understand the means of communication among birds, beasts and ants. Sulaiman had a story with a hoopoe bird, that informed him about the Yemeni Kingdom of Saba, whose people used to worship the sun. They were satisfied with their own human achievements, instead of looking to Allah, the True and Only Ilah. Sulaiman invited Balqis, Queen of Saba, to join the true Faith and bask in the light of Allah. Eventually, she accepted the Faith and joined Sulayman in praising Allah.
Sulaiman had a very blessed family background. He was a member of the clan of Bani Isra'il, and of the same lineage as the Prophets Yaqub and Ibrahim. His father was none other than the great Prophet and King, Dawud. His mother Nitzevet was also very special. She was a very noble and pious woman who taught Sulaiman many things. Prophet Muhammad even spoke of her, saying:
Once Sulaiman's mother told him, "Son, do not sleep all night because spending most of the night in sleep deprives the person from good deeds on the Day of Judgment." ('Ibn Majah)
It has been said that a Hebrew named Asaf ibn Yuhanna who was the son of Prophet Sulaiman's maternal aunt, another Hebrew named Yusuf ibn Isu, and a Persian Yahudi named al-Hurmazan ibn al-Kurdul used to write for Sulaiman the son of Dawud.
