Dawud (Arabic: دَاوُود ʾdāūd, "beloved" or possibly "chieftain") was a devout servant of Allah who used to observe fasting on one day and break it the next, besides practicing forms of worship for about two-thirds of the night. Allah revealed the Zabur to Daud, gave him wisdom and knowledge and granted him a strong kingdom in which mountains were subdued, all birds were assembled and iron was made soft.
He was from the clan of Bani Isra'il, the same family of Prophet Yaqub. Dawud's father was a noble man by the name of Isha. Isha had many sons, of which Dawud was the youngest. Dawud loved his father and was a kind and gentle son. While Dawud was still a young boy, his father sent him to travel with the Bani Isra'il army. This army was under the command of King Talut, the brave leader of Bani Isra'il. Talut's small army was to battle against the large and powerful forces of the evil Jalut. Dawud was not sent as a soldier, for he was too young. He was sent to take care of the soldiers and to help them whenever they needed assistance.
Historians report that he lived 100 years, that the length of his reign was 40 years, and that he had twelve sons.
