Kharijites otherwise known as Khawarij were a sect that originated during the reign of the 4th Caliph Ali where they seceded from both Sunni and Shia due to a disagreement involving Caliph Ali's peace treat with the Umayyad Caliph Muawiyah I after the Battle of Siffin which would decide the Caliphate's succession.
